Your AC Checklist
The summer heat, especially in El Paso, can be extremely inconvenient but also very dangerous if your home succumbs to the high temperatures. The comfort level inside your home relies on a properly working air conditioning unit which is why prepping the unit for the warm season ahead is vital. Read below for our handy checklist for you to review and see if you need AC repair.
Cut the Power- Before doing anything with your unit, always turn it off first. You never want to handle electrical equipment while it’s still drawing electricity. If there is no switch or lever on the side of the unit, you will have to shut it off by using the circuit breaker.
Clean Your Filters- Cleaning or regularly replacing your AC filters is the easiest way to avoid needing an AC repair. Filters should be replaced every six months. Other factors like the age of the equipment or pet dander may call for a replacement sooner.
Clean the Condenser Coil- The condenser coils are what transfer the warm air inside of your home to the outside. Dirt and other debris can collect on these coils so it's vital to keep them clean. Using a garden hose is the best way to clean them.
Clear Out Any Debris- With your AC unit being turned off for the fall and winter months, it would’ve collected dust or could be covered with leaves. This debris will restrict the airflow, which in turn causes the motor to work even harder to produce cool air. An overworking motor can eventually burn out, and then you would have no choice but to call a professional.
Check the Coolant Lines- The coolant lines are what keeps your house cool. If these lines are leaking, it can cause damage to your AC unit and also raise your electricity bill. If you notice your unit has lost its cooling power, fill out our online form to schedule an AC repair.
Test It- After you’ve given your AC unit a good cleaning, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. If everything sounds and feels good, you’re all set for the summer!
